While Families Pay More, Edison Spends Big in AD-68 Politics

Southern Californians deserve affordable electricity and representatives who will stand up to powerful utilities.

The cost of keeping the lights on has gone up dramatically for Southern California families.

At the same time, Edison International (the parent company of Southern California Edison) reported $4.46 billion in net income in 2025.

And Edison is spending money to influence who represents us in Sacramento.

Jessie Lopez believes the people of California’s 68th Assembly District deserve better.

Your electricity bill keeps going up!

According to Southern California Edison, the typical residential customer’s monthly bill increased from approximately $126 to $176.

That’s roughly a 40% increase between 2021 and 2024.

And the California Public Utilities Commission approved another rate increase for SCE customers in 2025. The CPUC said the decision would result in an approximately 9.1% increase for an average residential customer using 500 kilowatt-hours per month.

For families already struggling with the cost of housing, groceries, gas and everything else, another increase isn’t just a number on a utility bill.

It’s money out of their pockets.

Meanwhile, Edison reports $4.46 billion in net income.

Edison International reported $4.459 billion in net income in 2025, compared with $1.284 billion in 2024.

That’s a dramatic increase in reported net income.

And while some of that increase was attributable to non-core wildfire-related accounting items, Edison also reported $679 million in higher core earnings at Southern California Edison.

Families deserve to know: Who is looking out for them?

Edison is also spending big to try to shape Sacramento and elect leaders they know will not challenge them.

Edison International directly contributed $5,900 to Jessie Lopez’s opponent in the race to represent Californias 68th Assembly District, which includes parts of Orange, Anaheim, and Santa Ana.

But the political spending doesn’t stop there.

Edison has also put substantial money into political committees that participate in California elections.

Edison International contributed $2.2 million to JobsPAC, a California political committee.

JobsPAC subsequently spent $114,000 supporting Jessie Lopez’s opponent in the Assembly District 68 primary.

Edison also funds Powering California’s Future, which contributed $250,000 to Keeping Californians Working, another political committee that spent money in the AD-68 race.

Edison doesn’t just have a seat at the table. It’s spending money to help decide who gets a seat at the table.

Jessie Lopez believes our representatives should answer to you, not corporate donors.

Jessie believes Sacramento needs representatives who will fight for:

  • Affordable electricity for working families
  • Accountability from investor-owned utilities
  • A fairer energy system that doesn’t continually push higher costs onto consumers
  • Transparency in political spending
  • A government that puts residents before corporate interests

Jessie isn’t running for State Assembly to protect the status quo. She’s running to fight for the people who actually pay the bills.
